Elon Musk Criticizes Apple’s App Store Fees As ‘Global Tax On The Internet’

If you’ve been keeping up with Apple, you’d have heard about its ongoing battle with Epic Games, the creators of popular video game Fortnite. The two companies are still embroiled in a legal battle over the App Store, which Epic Games argued Apple has a monopoly on.
It seems neither side is keen on backing down, with Apple saying that developers who don’t agree with their terms can take their apps to Android instead. However, with the iPhone still being one of the most-used series of smartphones globally, many developers have no choice but to cater to iOS users as well.
Now, Tesla CEO Elon Musk has made new comments regarding the matter, siding with Epic in a series of tweets.
“Apple App Store fees are a de factor global tax on the Internet. Epic is right,” Musk tweeted last week.
According to TechCrunch, Musk’s tweets have led the wider tech community to wonder why the billionaire is choosing to speak out now. Though he often comments on contentious issues in the tech world, none of Musk’s companies seem to be affected by Apple’s App Store fees at the moment. However, there could very well be issues behind the scenes outsiders aren’t privy to.
As of now, there’s no end in sight to the saga. Many expect the Apple and Epic Games dispute to drag on for years, so there’s nothing to do but to wait for a verdict.
