‘Star Wars’ Announces R2-D2 Tamagotchi That Can’t Poop, Because He’s A Droid

Tamagotchi pets and owners now have a new neighbor, hailing all the way from a galaxy far, far away. In an unexpected expansion of the Disney universe, Disney has partnered with Tamagotchi maker Bandai to make R2-D2 even more endearing, turning him into an egg-shaped “droid buddy.”

As with all Tamagotchis, some level of commitment is required to train, clean, and care for your R2-D2, even though he is a robot. The stakes are high—neglect him for too long and he might get taken away by Jawas, the official Star Wars website prefaces.

R2-D2 can be trained to pick up 19 skills. You’ll also be able to play nine mini-games with him, including firefighting and Dejarik (holochess).

While the Tamagotchi doesn’t poop, it reacts to nature’s call by accumulating dust, so cleanup is inevitable.

The droid is housed in an egg of two retro finishes: the first being a white version resembling R2-D2 itself, and the other sporting a transparent blue look. Owners can interact with it through the toy’s three buttons.

Preorders will open at midnight ET on August 3 via Amazon, but new owners can only expect to meet their droid buddies from November 11.

“The R2-D2 Tamagotchi is pocket-sized, so he’s easy to take on any adventure — no X-wing required,” concludes Lucasfilm.
