Christie’s To Auction $200M Worth Of Impressionist Paintings, Including Van Gogh

The art collection of Texas oil tycoon and philanthropist Edwin L Cox will go under the hammer at Christie’s this November.
Featuring 25 Impressionist works, the collection includes paintings by Vincent van Gogh and Gustave Caillebotte, and is expected to fetch US$200 million. This marks the first time many of these works will be seen by the public since before World War II.
Cox passed away at the age of 99 last November, leaving behind a storied legacy in the arts. The billionaire served on the board of several institutions, such as the National Gallery of Art in Washington, DC and the Dallas Museum of Art. His collection of works was curated over the course of 50 years, as per ARTnews.
“The Cox collection will be remembered as a milestone in the art market. Most of the pictures will be seen as a once in a lifetime opportunity for any collector or museum,” said Adrien Meyer, Global Head of Private Sales and Chairman of Impressionist and Modern Art at Christie’s.
Highlights from the extensive collection includes Caillebotte’s Jeune homme à sa fenêtre (Young Man at His Window), painted in 1887, which is estimated to bring in more than US$50 million. If it does reach this estimate, it will be the highest auction price ever paid for the artist. Alongside that will be Van Gogh’s Cabanes de bois parmi les oliviers et cyprès (Wooden Huts Among Olive Trees and Cypress Trees) from 1889, which is estimated to fetch US$40 million.
Another landscape painting, L’Estaque aux toits rouges (Red Rooves of L’Estaque) by Paul Cézanne, is also up for sale, with an estimated price tag of US$35 million to US$55 million. Other works by Claude Monet, Alfred Sisley, and Édouard Vuillard will also be part of the collection, though more details have yet to be revealed.
Part of the collection will go on tour in Taipei, Tokyo, and Hong Kong, before going on showcase at Christie’s in London and New York.
