Swathed in baby blue hues and lifeguard-esque red and white accents, a jewelry store resides within a pristine Cycladic building in postcard-perfect Mykonos, Greece.
GAVELLO nel blu is the name of the jewelry store under the GAVELLO Milano brand, designed as a collaborative effort between Dive Architects and design agency Saint of Athens. The light blue tiles, lockers, beach balls and pool ladders aim to “create an oh-so familiar ambience and evoke an oblique summer feeling,” creative agency Saint of Athens
writes.
The fresh interior of the store boasts a cool blue, a color also reminiscent of 60s “urban pool luxury.” Custom vintage elements and displays by bespoke brand
Urbi et Orbi create a “retro yet modern, Wes Anderson kind of universe,” as described by Saint of Athens founder, Nikos Paleologos.
Towards the back of the store, a bench and set of red lockers create a small ‘changing room’ area. Round lights, similar to those in pools, line the bottom of the store, as they do a pool. Pegs that look like they were meant for towels have jewelry adorning them instead, and a large tile-covered island blends seamlessly into the middle of the store, providing a center stage for the products on display.
“We were looking for an unorthodox way to present the colorful and opulent Gavello designs, so we came up with a surreal, summery idea,” Paleologos tells
Dezeen. The danger, he explains, was that picturesque places like Mykonos tend to “trap themselves” into being either too rigidly traditional, or too artificially extravagant.
Hence the combination of nostalgic swimming pool and luxury: a perfect marriage.
