Bon Iver, Grimes, The 1975 Create 60,000 Sq Ft Of Art Fighting Climate Change

Apart from all having their own established and celebrated practices, 11 artists by the names of Bon Iver, Grimes, Jorja Smith, Miguel, Khruangbin, The 1975, Actress, Aluna, Mount Kimbie, Jayda G, Nosaj Thing now have one more thing in common.
That would be Undercurrent, the immersive art installation coming to Brooklyn this fall. The artists have each produced their own segment of work dedicated to the subject matter at hand, created in conjunction with one of three non-profits: Kiss the Ground, Ocean Conservancy, and Global Forest Generation. The work is focused heavily around climate change and the effects it has on our planet.
Undercurrent will span over 60,000 square feet of installation space, and is set to include a unique collection of audiovisual art as well as areas for educational modules and special programs. Described as “cause-driven,” the event hopes to bring its visitors new perspectives while “using creativity to spark conversations about critical issues shaping our lives.”

Although most of the artists’ contributions are kept top-secret until now, Bon Iver frontman Justin Vernon has allowed fans a sneak peek. His installation takes a moving image format and spans three screens, featuring video, audio, and dance. He also shares what his intentions of participating in this project were.
“You hope they walk out with their molecules rearranged a little bit,” Vernon says. “And that they go home and ask themselves, ‘How can I alter my lifestyle?’”
September 9 is the opening date for Undercurrent, which will be housed at the Jefferson, on the border of Bushwick and Williamsburg, Brooklyn. A portion of ticket sales will go towards the three organizations involved in the exhibition, and reservations can be made on the exhibit’s website.
