Netflix To Pull One Of Its Most Disputed Originals, As 240K Petition For Removal

Netflix is planning to take down one its most controversial original shows at the end of August. The First Temptation of Christ, which plays on Martin Scorsese’s 1988 The Last Temptation of Christ, has caused much controversy for both the streaming platform and its creators.
The show, produced by Brazilian comedy group Porta dos Fundos, has a description that reads: “Jesus, who’s hitting the big 3-0, brings a surprise guest to meet the family. A Christmas special so wrong, it must be from comedians Porta dos Fundos.”
According to BGR, the description leaves out the main plot point, in which the comedy presents Jesus coming out as gay. This portrayal of the religious figure has led to assaults at the headquarters of the comedy group, with some of their homes allegedly attacked with Molotov cocktails.
As of now, over 240,000 people have signed a petition on Change.org calling for the removal of the show. “It is shocking to discover that Netflix has zero respect or consideration for those of the Christian faith regarding their decision to add The First Temptation of Christ to their growing catalog of shows,” the campaign’s creators write.
It also describes the comedy as “far from funny but downright disrespectful and a highly offensive degradation of Jesus Christ.”
It seems the call to remove the show has had its intended effect, with Netflix listing it among the ‘Leaving Soon’ category.
