Instagram Apologizes For Deleting Film Poster With Nipple, Then Brings It Back

Adding to a long chain of questionable censorship decisions made by its algorithm, Instagram took down the official poster for Spanish director Pedro Almodóvar’s upcoming movie, Madres Paralelas, as it shows a female nipple. The platform has since apologized for the takedown and reinstated it.
It was Javier Jaén, the Spanish designer for the artwork—which features a lactating nipple, shaped like an eye with a teardrop—who called out the social network for the ban. Instagram owner Facebook then put it back up with an apology issued to the Associated Press.
The company said that the poster had been deleted for “breaking our rules against nudity,” which prohibit the display of the female nipple. However, it added that its guidelines also allow for “exceptions… in certain circumstances,” such as if the imagery has “clear artistic context.”
“We’ve therefore restored posts sharing the Almodóvar movie poster to Instagram, and we're really sorry for any confusion caused,” a spokesperson for Facebook elaborated.
Jaén had attempted a reupload of the movie poster before Instagram’s decision to reinstate the original, so there are now two of the same image on his profile.
The film, about two expectant single women in hospital with conflicting views about becoming mothers, is due to premiere at the Venice Film Festival on September 1.
