Picasso Paintings Worth $100 Million To Go Up For Auction In Las Vegas

In celebration of Picasso’s 140th birthday, Sotheby’s announced it’ll be hosting a mega Picasso sale, with 11 of the famed artist’s works going under the hammer. The works are owned by MGM Resorts, and are valued at a staggering US$100 million.
For such an exclusive event, only the best venue would suffice. Therefore, Sotheby’s plans to recreate its famous New York auction room right in the Bellagio, one of the most iconic landmarks in Las Vegas. Many of the works being auctioned had hung in hotel’s “Picasso” restaurant.
According to The Guardian, a highlight of the sale is 1938 painting Femme au Béret Rouge-Orange – one of the artist’s very lat works featuring his muse and young lover Marie-Thérèse Walter. The estimate of the piece currently stands at US$20 to US$30 million.
Alongside the piece will be other works, including larger paintings Homme et Enfant and Buste d’Homm. Both these artworks were featured at the 1970 Palais des Papes in Avignon exhibition, one of the most important of Picasso’s storied career.
History buffs will also appreciate Nature Morte au Panier de Fruits et aux Fleurs, estimated to be worth US$10 million to US$15 million. The still-life painting was created in 1942, when Picasso was banned by Nazis (who occupied Paris) from showcasing any of his works.
The sale is scheduled to take place on October 23, and hold the title of the largest-ever fine art auction to take place in the state.
“As one of the most famous, beloved, and accomplished artists of all time, we couldn’t imagine anyone better than Picasso to inaugurate this unique art and culture experience,” said Brooke Lampley, Worldwide Head of Fine Art Sales at Sotheby’s.
