T-Mobile Investigates Huge Data Breach That Could Affect Up To 100M People

If you’re signed up to the T-Mobile network, there’s bad news. The carrier has told Motherboard that it is investigating claims in an “underground forum” about a possible breach of over 100 million customers’ details.
According to the report, the person selling the data claims they have obtained customers’ personal information, including social security numbers and device IMEI numbers (a 15-digit code unique to each smartphone). While it’s still unclear if the rumored number of 100 million is true, the site said it had verified some of the data put up for sale.
The hacker had listed 30 million customers’ data for the equivalent of US$270,000 in Bitcoin. As per Engadget, the rest of the data is allegedly being sold through private channels instead of via the same forum.
As of now, it hasn’t been determined how the hacker got hold of the information. Though T-Mobile had supposedly kicked them out of its servers, it could’ve been after the intruder had possibly downloaded and backed up the content.
This isn’t the first time the network has fallen victim to data breaches. Back in 2020, hackers managed to get hold of limited data from 200,000 users. However, if the current claims are true, it would undoubtedly be the largest breach in the carrier’s history.
