Twitter Once Again Halts Verification Requests After Approving Fake Users

Some fake accounts have all the luck—they’ve been awarded the elusive blue checkmark by Twitter—while genuine, authentic users have been coveting one for ages. And after going back and forth about granting accounts ‘Verified’ status, Twitter is once again dashing dreams of users ever getting verified.
“We’ve temporarily hit pause on rolling out access to apply for Verification so we can make improvements to the application and review process,” the Twitter Verified account tweets. “For those who have been waiting, we know this may be disappointing. We want to get things right, and appreciate your patience.”
Even after the social network began requiring applicants to submit official government-issued ID documents, or official email addresses or websites, a number of fraudulent bots and an impersonator of novelist Cormac McCarthy still managed to receive verification status, Mashable notes. Twitter did not clarify why it decided to pause the program, but these incidents likely influenced its decision.
Prior to this suspension, Twitter said it would hold users accountable for the maintenance of their badges, and that they could lose them by violating a rule. Understandably, it received an overwhelming swarm of requests, and was forced to suspend the program briefly.
Now, Twitter is continuing to review existing applications, but those hoping to submit a fresh request will have to wait for an unspecified amount of time. As one user laments, “What’s another lifetime?”
