Canon Files Patent For Convenient ‘Donut’ Camera That Resembles Instagram’s Logo

Canon has registered a rather interesting patent for a new camera design, as spotted by Asobinet and Canon Rumors. The aforementioned design turns the camera in to an L-shaped donut all in the name of ease of access.
In the patent filing, Canon outlines its aim to create a product with a secure grip in both horizontal and vertical positions. This design would make it easier to switch the photographer’s position from portrait to landscape, or vice versa, with a reduced risk of dropping the prized camera.
Diagrams show the proposed squarish silhouette, à la the Instagram icon, that PetaPixel details has been used in the brand’s 1D series and is expected to make a return in the EOS R3.

Additionally, the illustrations point out ‘touch sensors’ incorporated into the design around the grip’s opening. Their description is all too reminiscent of the Touch Bar on the EOS R, which indicates that Canon might have taken the lessons learned from its previous design that didn’t quite land.
Annotations of ‘operation units’ also make an appearance on the diagrams, although there isn’t much else information on them. Other than that, the camera’s elements seem quite standard. As pointed out by Canon Rumors, one of the other applications of this design would be active cooling.

A patent being registered is one thing, but whether the design will actually make it onto a camera is another. However, nothing has been said by Canon as of now, and it looks like we’re just going to have to wait and see.
