Apple Ordered To Hand Over $300 Million To Optis For Violating LTE Patents

A US jury has ordered Apple to pay US$300 million to Optis Wireless Technology after it was found to have infringed on several patents relating to 4G LTE technology, reported Reuters.
In August last year, another jury had found that the tech giant had infringed upon five patents from Optis Wireless, and awarded the company US$506 million in damages. However, a Texas judge overruled the award and ordered a new trial this year to focus solely on the damages incurred.
According to MacRumors, despite the ruling, Apple argued that Optis and its subsidiaries were “patent trolls” – a name given to firms that don’t manufacture products, but only generate revenue through patent lawsuits.
“Optis makes no products and its sole business is to sue companies using patents they accumulate. We will continue to defend against their attempts to extract unreasonable payments for patents they acquire,” said Apple.
Following this ruling, a new question emerges: Will Apple hand over the fine or continue its defense?
