Controversial Social Network Yik Yak Returns To The App Store After Years

Yik Yak, the controversial anonymous social media platform, has made its return to Apple’s App Store. The app had been on hiatus for four years, and though it’s currently only available on iPhones in the US, there are plans to expand its availability once again.
The app appeared on the scene in 2013, and allowed users to create discussion threads named “yaks” within a five-mile radius of one another, while others within the vicinity were considered your “herd.” Users could anonymously comment and vote on content.
However, according to a report from The New York Times, the social platform’s anonymity allegedly led to cyber harassment, bullying and threats, hate speech, and even threats of bomb and gun violence.
In a bid to prevent the same from happening this time, the new app has included ‘Community Guardrails’, ‘Mental Health Resources’, and ‘Stay Safe Resources’. If users see content that doesn’t meet the guidelines, they’ll be able to report it, as per CNET.
