Electric Transport Brand Bird Launches $2,299 Bike You Can Own Instead Of Rent

Micro-mobility firm Bird has been helping commuters get around the city with its transport rental service of e-scooters, bikes, and even electric wheelchairs. Now, it’s going above bike-sharing with an electric bicycle that people can actually own.
The new Bird Bike, retailing for US$2,299, is built by the same designers and engineers who created Bird’s shared electric scooters, and boasts a 500w Rear Hub Bafang motor with 50 miles of range along with a manual throttle “for an instant e-boost” up inclines.
The e-bike is powered by a 36-volt LG battery that can be removed for easy charging, while a fully integrated backlit handlebar LCD display notifies the rider of their speed, battery level, and other important information. The compatible Bird app lets users turn the bicycle’s lights on and off, and puncture-resistant tires ensure a smooth ride.

“The electric Bird Bike is perfect for your everyday commute, leisurely riding and everything in-between,” the brand describes. It adds that the vehicle “combines the best features of commuter bikes, mountain bikes, and electric powered bikes to create the ultimate ride.”
According to Engadget, riders in the US will be able to tap into the bike’s 500 watts of continuous rated power. However, due to local regulations, users based in the UK and the EU will just get 250 watts.
The Bird Bike, washed in Stealth Black and Gravity Gray colorways, is available in two frame options: step-through and step-over. A limited count will be sold during this release, though Bird intends to roll out more in the US and Europe in the fall.
