Fjällräven Revamps Its Famous Kånken Bag With Trees To Make Eco ‘Tree Kånken’

That boxy backpack with the print of an Arctic Fox that you’ve been seeing everywhere is now available in green, as green as trees can be—especially in the eco sense. Swedish outdoor brand Fjällräven has reimagined the iconic Kånken bag with material responsibly treated from trees, giving us the ‘Tree Kånken’.
The sustainable top-handled backpack—virtually indiscernible from the original—sees Fjällräven’s exploration with replacements for synthetic fibers, traditionally produced from fossil fuels.
In place of those, it has incorporated Pine Weave fabric and 100% bio-based raw materials, sourced sustainably from its home country of Sweden, into the bags. Pine Weave starts as wood, which—in contrast with fossil-based synthetic fibers—is renewable and grows naturally and easily from sunlight and nutrition.

To create the material, wood chips are boiled into a pulp and dissolved to create a sticky, viscous cellulose product. It’s then treated with 95% recycled chemicals and water to become lyocell fibers, before being spun into a special yarn.
This creates Pine Weave, which the company says is sturdier and more durable than most plant-based fabrics, and just as hardy as its classic Kånken material. According to SPY, even the chemicals used to make the eco backpack water-resistant are 99.6% recycled.
Visually, the Tree Kånken takes a leaf (sorry) out of its predecessor’s book, and is even waxed for a “natural melange look.” The only giveaways are its reflective logo and flat front pocket.
Ideal for everyday travel, this version is even designed with straps to fasten a jacket or yoga mat, as well as loops to hold a bicycle lamp and other objects.
