Airbnb Is Putting Up 20,000 Afghan Refugees In Temporary Lodging

Formerly all in for travel experiences, Airbnb is stepping up amid a crisis in Afghanistan to give refugees a roof over their heads.
With thousands leaving the country after a takeover by the Taliban, the homestay rental company has announced that it will house up to 20,000 Afghan refugees around the world, according to a report by Insider. The platform will work with its nonprofit, Airbnb.org, to find temporary lodgings—both for short-term and long-term stays—offered by hosts for free or at discounted prices.
CEO Brian Chesky will cover the costs for the initiative. Meanwhile, he and the company, as well as donors to the Airbnb.org Refugee Fund, have already dedicated funds for refugees’ resettlement.
Airbnb is in touch with resettlement agencies to match Afghans with temporary housing, and the movement has currently found accommodating for refugees and their loved ones in Sacramento, Northern Virginia, Cleveland, Dallas, Washington, and New Jersey, Insider learned.
Airbnb acknowledges that the “humanitarian crisis” is “fast evolving,” and it will thus adapt to the situation as it changes to “evolve this initiative and our support as necessary.”
