Here’s Why So Many iPhone Users Are Setting Their Location To France

Many iPhone users are changing their device’s setting to France, despite not being in the country. Why? Turns out, a “hack” on Reddit and social media claims that this could speed up older iPhones.
According to a report from GizChina, France’s competition watchdog had imposed a US$27 million fine on Apple in 2020 for deliberately slowing down older devices.
This isn’t news to most iPhone users, as the company had confirmed the long-speculated rumor in 2017. Naturally, it said that this was to increase the performance of the smartphone’s lithium-ion batteries as they age.
“Electronic components require a minimum voltage to properly operate. When the operations can no longer be supported with the full capabilities of the power management system, the system will perform a shutdown to preserve these electronic components,” Apple said in a statement.
Now, users on social media are saying that due to the lawsuit in France, Apple has stopped slowing down older iPhones in the country. And by setting your iPhone’s location there, you’ll be able to prevent newer iOS upgrades from slowing down your iPhone, as per IFL Science.
While this hasn’t been proven to work, it could also cause battery issues for older iPhones. As per Apple’s statement, should the power management system not be able to handle the new upgrades, your iPhone could start shutting down unexpectedly. So it’s best to proceed with caution.
