Nightclub Is Turning Body Heat Into Energy To Power Its Equipment

In The Flintstones, equipment is powered by pedaling, running, and other means of manual activity. It turns out that this concept works in the modern era. Glasgow’s SWG3 nightclub is drawing from the body heat of partygoers and staff to run its heating and cooling outlets.
At the SWG3 club, guests can let off steam and carbon emissions at the dance floor, thanks to a renewable heating and cooling system simply known as ‘BODYHEAT’. The scheme, which is in trial, collects “the incredible amounts of body heat generated by SWG3’s crowds” through heat pumps and fluids, and then funnels this concentrated energy into a dozen 150-meter-deep (492 feet) boreholes drilled underground.
The combined heat can be harnessed as a form of air conditioning, and even to power the club’s lights and music in “full production.” When not in use, the energy will remain in the depot until, say, central heating is needed.
“With this new system in place, we’ll be able to utilize that warmth, consuming minimal electricity and gas on site and in turn minimizing our carbon emissions,” the business details.
By the club’s estimates from attendance numbers of previous years, it could save 70 tonnes of carbon emissions simply by tapping into body heat.
