Beginning this week, Microsoft is launching its own customizable and personalized news aggregator, called Microsoft Start.

Microsoft Start will be available both as an in-browser website as well as an app, and will be integrated into Windows 10, Windows 11, and the Microsoft Edge browser.

Similar to other news aggregators such as Flipboard, Microsoft Start will tailor each user’s feed to their interests. As one clicks on more articles and ignores others, the app’s AI will learn more about the user, helping it populate that feed with more content.

If you’re looking for specific categories, you’ll also be able to manually add and remove areas of interest from the ‘Personalize’ button.

Categories range from news to technology, entertainment, and sports. According to TechCrunch, niche categories can also be added via a search.

As with most news sites, users can also indicate if they like or dislike an article by rating it with a thumbs up or thumbs down button. You can also react to stories with a series of emojis similar to those on Facebook, though the laughing emoji has been replaced with a thinking one.

Unfortunately, if you’re looking for an ad-free news experience, this won’t be it. As with other news aggregators that are free of charge, advertisements are to be expected in between the articles. In Microsoft Start, such advertisements will be marked with a green badge, so you’ll know what to look out for.
