You Can Now Own A 1,000-Year-Old UK Castle For Just $4 Million

If you’ve ever dreamed of living in your very own castle, now’s the chance. Recently, a 22,000-square-foot castle in the UK has gone on the market, and it could be yours for US$4.15 million.
The 1000-year-old structure, known as the Otterburn Castle, sits in the village of Otterburn in Northumberland County, in the North of England. Records of the building’s history date back all the way to the 11th century.

Nestled on a spacious 32 acres of land, Otterburn Castle has been home to many aristocratic families over time. It was then revamped into a hotel in the 1940s, but “the time has come to return it to its original use as a private family residence,” explained Jason Corbett, Director Country Sales and Lettings at Sotheby’s UK.
In an email to Mansion Global, Corbett said that apart from the property itself, the larger area of Northumberland is a sight to behold.

“This castle is truly something special—one of very few castles in England and boasting a rich history. Situated on the edge of Northumberland National Park and Kielder Forest, the surrounding scenery is second to none,” he added.
The property’s land was once gifted by William the Conqueror to his cousin Robert D’Umphraville in 1076, which he was instructed to “keep free from wolves and enemies,” as per the hotel’s website.

A pele tower, which helped defend the castle against outside raids, was built sometime between 1245 and 1308, with part of the foundation still existing.
The castle’s history is undoubtedly rich, as it also had a part to play in the Battle of Otterburn in 1388 and the Jacobite Rebellion of the early 1700s. It’s been designated as a Grade II* building by Historic England, meaning that it’s considered “an important building of more than special interest.”

If you’re enticed by the castle’s captivating history, now’s the best chance to snag it. Today, it comes with 17 en-suite bedrooms, each styled in a unique theme. Plus, there are three staff apartments (of course).
