‘Risky Business’ Porsche Driven By Tom Cruise Takes Off For Almost $2M At Sale

A slick chunk of movie history went off the block last week as a Porsche 928 driven by Tom Cruise in 1983’s Risky Business was swiftly sold for US$1.98 million, at no reserve.
The sale broke the world record for most expensive Porsche 928 sold at an auction from any year, according to car auctioneer Barrett-Jackson Houston. Previously green, the 1979 model has since been painted gold and sports a brown leather interior.
A little piece of trivia about the filmmaking business: like most stunt objects, it is believed there were three Porsche 928 cars used in the movie. This variation was apparently the “hero” vehicle and was the primary car used for closeups and most driving scenes—though as Autoblog points out, it wasn’t the one that dipped into Lake Michigan.
The model runs on a 4.7-liter V8 and comes with a stick shift. Interestingly, Tom Cruise learned to drive a stick for the film using this very vehicle.
After retiring from showbiz, the car had apparently been parked outside by an owner who had no knowledge of its past life. Far removed from its heyday, it was later restored to its original appearance and displayed at the Petersen Museum for a Porsche-focused exhibition.
At nearly US$2 million, it’s evident that the new owner is acutely aware of the vehicle’s value in the world of pop culture.
