3D billboards took the world by storm when they were programmed to depict lions and water, but they haven’t really been used to advertise video games before. And humans haven’t made much of an appearance, either.
That’s changed now, though. In the newest billboard causing waves, video game developer miHoYo’s Genshin Impact steals the spotlight.
Resident idol and star Barbara opens the curtains and leans out of a massive window to wave at onlookers passing by on the streets of Chengdu Taiguli in Jinjiang, China, as shown in footage uploaded on video-sharing platform Bilibili.
She then catches a Crystalfly, a mythical creature from the game, and opens a gift box in the form of a Slime to reveal the static advertisement for the game splashed boldly across all angles of the screen.
Because Barbara was designed to be a celebrity in the game, it’s fitting that she was picked to be the face of the advertisement.
Either way, it’s a pretty cool way to run advertisements for a game as it lets players—current and potential—see the characters “in real life” to enhance the fantasy world within the game’s environment.
