Samsung & LG Present Future Foldable Screens That ‘Rise & Fall,’ Don’t Crease

OLED screens, in all their vibrant high-contrast glory, seem to be the future of display. Most notably, they have been implemented on the Nintendo Switch to positive reviews.
Further developing this are Samsung and LG, with the two companies showcasing their latest designs at the Global Tech Korea 2021 event, as reported by ETNews.
Samsung is innovating a stretchable OLED screen that may provide a 3D-viewing experience on its televisions, while LG is striving to create something that will do away with the crease on foldable devices.
Although Samsung is currently paving the way in foldable smartphones with its Galaxy Z Fold and Z Flip, it has been noted that after some usage, the devices develop somewhat of a crease down the middle of the bend.
This would explain its foray into a stretchable, creaseless screen for its future foldables.
In the demonstration video below, the flexible screen is shown to be able to independently rise and fall to mimic the flow of lava, which is the scene playing on the device. Apart from solving the problem of the crease on its phones, Samsung may be planning to incorporate this into its televisions to evoke a 3D experience.
Meanwhile, LG is exploring something called a ‘Real Folding Window’ through LG Chem. As its name may suggest, it’s a real, foldable material that ensures the surfaces will remain “as hard as glass, while the folding parts as flexible as plastic.”
The material is perfect for displays. Its toughness will ensure it doesn’t shatter upon the first impact, but its flexibility will provide the seamless experience smartphone users desire.
LG Chem also states that its price is competitive with the existing polyimide film screen. “Due to its outstanding flexibility, durability is maintained completely even when folding more than 200,000 times,” the company claims.
The Real Folding Window is expected to start mass-production in 2022, but sales won’t start until 2023. When the product begins to appear, though, it will most likely be seen in foldable smartphones potentially alongside TVs, tablets, and laptops, too.
