Adobe Revamps Masking In Lightroom With Smarter AI Tool For Instant Selections

This October, Adobe will be introducing a new update to its Lightroom software, which will help photographers and editors highlight a picture’s subjects with less work.
The new masking feature, which is trained by artificial intelligence technology, will allow users to spotlight the subject of an image with a single click. People, animals, or landmarks will stand out more with the AI’s ability to make corrections to the photograph’s color, lighting, and more.
According to CNET, the update works by using AI to identify particular subjects of interest in photographs. For example, if a user selects the top portion of a landscape image, it’ll be able to identify that area as the sky. The function helps make certain areas stand out more in the image.

“Select Subject uses a specially trained saliency detector to identify the central subject in a photo and has been trained with over 500,000 photos covering a range of people, man-made structures, animals, and natural objects,” explained Adobe.
The masking tool will be available in Lightroom, Lightroom Classic, and the Adobe Camera Raw (ACR) function in Photoshop. However, it won’t be included in the web version of the apps.
Going forward, Adobe is working on more tools using this selection technology.
“We’ve also got some fun new tech brewing that we’re really excited about that will take further advantage of bitmap-based masks which we’ll be releasing sometime next year,” Adobe’s Josh Bury wrote in a blog post detailing the update.
