If you’re an active user of Apple’s Messages app and haven’t upgraded to the latest iOS version yet, it might be best to hold off until the next update comes around. Currently, the app has been removing users’ photos and, ironically, iCloud backups are making things worse.

First reported by MacRumors, citing frustrated readers, users have had their photos erased after saving images in Messages to the iCloud Photo Library, then deleting the conversation from which the photos came from.

The photos would remain in the iCloud Photo Library but would vanish after an iCloud backup is performed.

This is a severe issue and, as BGR notes, could be upsetting for friends and family who frequently use Messages to exchange precious photos during a time of separation.

Since the bug continues to live in iOS 15, you can still trigger it. So beware—or satiate your curiosity.

There’s no fix for it as of now. In the meantime, keep your text threads close and your photos closer.
