A protestor shockingly crashed the Louis Vuitton runway show at Paris Fashion Week, holding up a banner that read: “Overconsumption = Extinction.”
The fashion show, which was held at an art gallery in the Louvre, had been disrupted when a woman climbed onto the stage, just as the models were flaunting the brand’s latest designs.
It appears that she had been representing three separate groups, Amis de la Terre (Friends of the Earth) France, Youth for Climate, and Extinction Rebellion.
According to France 24, Amis de la Terre explained that it had targeted the Louis Vuitton fashion show as its parent company, LVMH, was behind some of the world’s most famous luxury brands.
“LVMH is the world leader of luxury and has a responsibility when it comes to trends that push the textile industry to constantly renew collections faster, and produce more,” spokesperson Alma Dufour told
Reuters.
The organizations said more than 30 people were involved in planning the protest, of which two have been arrested. They wanted to lobby the French government to cut down production in the fashion sector, as findings have shown that “42 items of clothing were sold per person in France in 2019.”
While it remains unknown if the groups’ analysis is correct, the protest does shed light on the increasing risk of overconsumption in this era, especially as climate change begins to worsen.
Should market leaders be held responsible for not addressing the wastefulness of the industry? Well, as of now, LVMH has yet to comment on the matter.
