Facebook sprung a mid-week surprise on everyone when rumors emerged that the social media giant was looking to
change its name in a major, unprecedented rebranding effort.
First reported by The Verge, many have speculated the name could be linked to the company’s virtual reality platform, Horizon, or have something to do with “Meta,” as founder Mark Zuckerberg looks to expand into a new digital frontier.
Journalist Casey Newton has now
confirmed that the announcement will either come on Monday, during the firm’s earnings call, or on Thursday, at its Oculus Connect conference. However, despite the rebrand only being less than a week away, it’s been reported that Zuckerberg has yet to settle on the platform’s new name.
According to the report, Facebook has been considering the change for at least two months. In fact, the brand’s former CMO had pushed for a rebrand three years ago, but was overruled. It seems that the firm’s executives have decided now’s a better time than any to lay the new ground.
Considering the big change could just be a few days away, Zuckerberg and his crew should probably get brainstorming as soon as possible.
