Reddit Wants To Build Its Own NFT Marketplace, As Shown In Rogue Job Listing

NFTs and crypto have all but exploded this year, and many companies have been racing to get their slice of the (digital) pie. Even kids are getting into them.
In terms of social media platforms, Facebook is perhaps most notorious for its intensive efforts going toward building its “metaverse.”
But, of course, it’s not the only one interested in the rapidly-growing market.
Insider spotted a job posting by Reddit, looking for a “Senior Backend Engineer, NFT Platform.” Although the platform doesn’t yet exist and this is the first that many of us are hearing of it, it looks like it’s something that may just become reality faster than we can say “NFT.”
Since NFTs and crypto are very much digital assets, it seems almost like a no-brainer for a site that brands itself as “the frontpage of the Internet” to hop on the bandwagon.
“For many, it’s a way to support their favorite artists, and for others it’s a way to curate impressive collections of ultra-rare collectibles,” the job listing writes. “Just as cryptocurrencies are set to revolutionize the world of economics and finance, NFTs are going to rewrite how we think about digital goods.”
Some of the responsibilities the engineer will need to take on include needing to “design, build and ship backend services for millions of users to create, buy, sell and use NFT-backed digital goods.”
This sends all fingers pointing toward a marketplace on the social news site, rivaling the likes of OpenSea and Sotheby’s.
Because Reddit is built on the notion of community, NFTs and the act of owning one—or a couple of hundred—fit right in. The site explains how every new NFT project will see a new “vibrant community of owners” that come with it. Fans who are drawn to purchasing these digital goods directly from their creators are able to “feel a greater sense of connection with them,” Reddit explains.
“Over time, we believe this will only grow, and NFTs will play a central role in how fans support their favorite creators and communities.”
