Barcelona Will Reward Residents Who Ditch Their Cars With Free Transport

If you’re thinking of moving abroad to an accessible city, Barcelona might be one to consider. Apart from its picturesque towns and incredible cuisine, the city’s government is now giving three years’ worth of free public transport to residents who choose to do away with their cars.
According to Barcelona’s transit agency, residents living in the metropolitan area who decommission a non-electric vehicle will gain access to T-verda, a brand-new travel card that allows one to ride the city’s public transport for free for three years.
This initiative comes as more cities in Europe are incentivizing residents to give up carbon-emitting vehicles for more eco-friendly methods of transport. For example, as per Treehugger, France and Finland have introduced programs for drivers to exchange their old cars for e-bikes instead.
The site posits that the positives of such an offer are numerous. Essentially, as the public transport network is already in place, Barcelona won’t be spending a staggering amount of money by providing residents with free public transport.
Additionally, with fewer cars on the road, less greenhouse gases, and more active citizens, there’s a lot for the city to gain from implementing such an initiative.
Will more cities look to invest in their public transit system and encourage residents to make the switch?
Well, if programs such as the one in Barcelona are successful, it’ll go a long way to reducing the number of vehicles and carbon emissions clogging up our roads and skies.
