Adobe Teases Experimental AI That Turns Still Photos Into Realistic Footage

Along with its usual announcements of major upgrades to the Creative Cloud suite, Adobe shared a number of experimental, AI-powered features it calls ‘Sneaks’ at the annual MAX event. These are snapshots of clever tools in the works that the company may or may not incorporate into future products.
This year, visitors were introduced to ‘Project In-Between’, a feature that stitches two or more similar photos from moments apart into “living photos.” Adobe says the project is “a new way to cherish your memories.” It’s certainly a cool way to reuse images in your camera roll that aren’t quite the perfect shot, like one where a subject is captured with their eyes closed.
With the help of Adobe’s Sensei AI, ‘Project In-Between’ creates an “animated bridge” between static photos—and even short video clips—to generate looping, “silky-smooth” slow-motion videos. Adobe research scientist Simon Niklaus, who demonstrated the Sneak, said this can be done in one click.
Granted, such images, called cinemagraphs, have existed for some time. However, PetaPixel notes that most techniques base their creation of sequences from single images. ‘In-Between’, on the other hand, uses two or more stills to develop a more accurate “living photo.”
