Last week, the corporate entity formerly known as Facebook announced that it would become
Meta, in one of the industry’s largest-ever rebranding efforts. Since then, it has shed more light on its plans for a future metaverse, including greater investments in
virtual-reality experiences.
Now, as seen in a leaked image, Meta could be working on a smartwatch to potentially rival Apple and Samsung’s offerings. The picture, which was found in the tech giant’s app for its
Ray-Ban smart glasses, depicts a watch with a large display screen and slightly rounded edges.
More notably, there seems to be a front-facing camera at the bottom of the watch, in addition to the standard toggles and control buttons. If true, Meta’s smartwatch would be the first in the market to offer a camera for video conferencing on the go.
The leak was first discovered by app developer
Steve Moser, who then shared the image with
Bloomberg News. As of now, no one from Meta’s press team has commented on the finding.
According to an insider, Meta could launch its smartwatch as early as next year, though nothing’s been confirmed just yet. He revealed the company was working on three different generations of the product, which will be released at different times.
However, this could mean that the leaked image may not be an accurate portrayal of what the final offering will look like.
Will Meta’s smartwatch stand up to the popular models from Apple and Samsung? Or will it lose out by entering the market a little too late? We’ll soon find out.
