Netflix Could Turn An Old Army Base Into A Production Hub For Originals

A now-defunct army base in Fort Monmouth, New Jersey, could be home to Netflix’s latest production hub. The streaming service recently announced plans to bid for the location, though it hasn’t been revealed how much it would cost to secure the century-old site.
According to the New York Times, Netflix is facing stiff competition for the base, which was shut down in 2011.
Other developers have expressed interest in the location, offering over US$100 million for a smaller cut of it, though none of those deals have pulled through. This likely means the media platform will have to fork up quite a hefty sum should it want to secure the building.
New Jersey has become a popular destination for production companies to set up new studios, as Governor Phil Murphy introduced tax credits for businesses.
As per SlashGear, it’s reported that Netflix will be looking to turn the site into a production hub for filming its original movies and television series, as well as post-production editing.
Despite how large the army base is, it still wouldn’t be Netflix’s biggest production facility. Back in 2018, the company purchased a studio complex in New Mexico, which it said would help create over 1,000 new jobs each year.
Should this deal get the green light, it’ll undoubtedly create many employment opportunities for those in the region as well.
