Tesla Introduces Its First Charger That Works With All EVs, Except Tesla’s Own

Tesla has been saying that it would expand its proprietary Supercharger network to electric vehicles (EVs) of other brands, and it seems that the company has begun to take its first steps.
On Monday, a brand-new home charger was revealed and added to the company’s online store. This is the J1772 Gen 2 Wall Connector, which can be used for any EV. This is a first for Tesla: selling a charger without its own proprietary connector in the US.
Up to a 9.6 kW, or 40 amp, power output is provided for a single vehicle through its 24-foot cable. In order to make it as versatile as possible, multiple power settings are offered as well as a design that can be used both indoors and outdoors.

Tesla’s own EVs, however, will require an adapter in order to use this connector, so the company is still recommending the more suitable Wall Connector for Tesla owners.
It has been noted by Electrek that its pricing at US$415 makes it quite an affordable level-two charger. However, unlike Tesla’s latest Gen 3 charger, this one doesn’t connect to Wi-Fi.

In a similar arms-open move, Tesla also announced on Monday that it is launching a Non-Tesla Supercharger pilot at 10 Supercharger locations in the Netherlands. In a statement, the company declares that its goal is to “eventually welcome both Tesla and Non-Tesla drivers at every Supercharger worldwide.”
