Honda Launches Electric Scooter With A ‘Canopy’ & Swappable Batteries

Honda, like many other big names in the automotive industry, has shown a steady interest in developing its upcoming products in line with a cleaner, greener future.
Last week, the Japanese automotive company showcased its latest electric trike, the Gyro Canopy:e. The three-wheeler is built on the previous Gyro:e’s design, but with a very noticeable difference in both name and build: the canopy.
This adds a roof to the scooter, offering some form of protection from the weather for its riders. Of course, since the sides are still very much in the open, it’s not a complete shield. But it’s much better than none, and in the case of rain, the bulk of the water will slide right off the roof.

The Gyro Canopy:e utilizes a set of swappable batteries, called the Honda Mobile Power Pack, which makes powering up the vehicle a breeze. Two of these batteries total about 2.6 kWh, and removing them to switch out for new ones with a full charge is much quicker than waiting to fill up a gas tank.

With this electricity, the scooter has a peak power output of 3,200W and touts a maximum range of about 48 miles when measured at 18mph. This is probably the average speed it’d be operating at most of the time, anyway; it was created for deliveries in dense urban areas, Electrek points out.
For now, the Gyro Canopy:e is only available in Japan. Honda states that it costs around ¥715,000 (US$6,295), making it pricier than its previous models of electric scooters. But, hey, at least you won’t get the unforgiving wind blowing spitting rain straight into your face with this.
