Claude Monet’s ‘Water Lilies’ Heads To Auction, Could Fetch Over $40 Million

One of Claude Monet’s famed Water Lilies paintings will head to auction this month at Sotheby’s Modern Art Evening Sale, with curators expecting it to fetch over US$40 million.
The artwork, titled Coin Le Bassin aux Nymphéas (1918), is part of the series of works the Impressionist artist painted in the last decade of his life. The works drew inspiration from his garden in Giverny, France.
With previous pieces from the series having sold for high prices, including one at Christie’s in 2008 for US$80.5 million, there’s no doubt this painting will be highly sought-after by collectors worldwide.
In 2018, another painting of water lilies, this time from David Rockefeller’s collection, went under the hammer for US$84 million.
The work’s current owner, an American collector, purchased the piece over two decades ago, only paying US$6.7 million for it at the time.
The painting recently traveled to the Denver Art Museum, and the Museum Barberini in Potsdam, Germany, as part of a 2020 showcase featuring the French artist’s works.
