Gucci Sends Out First Curve Runway Models Since Its Founding A Century Ago

For its centenary show on Tuesday, Gucci took to the enduringly charming Hollywood Boulevard and showcased 115 different interpretations of Old Hollywood glamor on the sidewalk. Fittingly, the highly-anticipated Gucci Love Parade event was accented by some familiar faces from the silver screen, like Macaulay Culkin, Phoebe Bridgers, Jared Leto, and Steve Lacy.
Also notable, though, is that this was the first time in history that the fashion house had enlisted curve models to walk its runway, according to Dazed. Previously, Gucci’s only work with plus-size models was reportedly with cleaner-turned-model Clara Louise, who starred in a campaign with Harry Styles, Billie Eilish, and Florence Welch last year.

Among them was 21-year-old Texas-born model Tess McMillan (shown below), who made her fashion show debut at Dolce & Gabbana’s Spring/Summer 2019 event.

The 115 models rocked cinematic styles that embodied a spectrum of film genres, from noir to Western and sci-fi, donning elements like sequins, feathers, and cowboy hats.
Several of these looks directly hark back to iconic pieces from film history, such as Jean Harlow’s sequinned feather robe in Dinner at Eight, Anna May Wong’s dragon-accented number in 1934’s Limehouse Blues, and Jim Carrey’s getup in Ace Ventura: Pet Detective. Gucci even honored the styling challenges required to look “perfect” with a faux nip-slip concealed by nipple stickers.
They’re a manifestation of creative director Alessandro Michele’s memories growing up; Michele’s mother, who worked in the film industry, would return home to share stories from work.
