It’s an annual tradition of many to kick back and cozy up around the fireplace, even if they don’t have one. Yule log videos recreate that sense of being near this beloved spot, allowing anyone to watch and hear the fire crackle at the simple click of a button.
Being able to watch these makeshift fireplaces is a privilege in itself, as we’re doing so with a roof above our heads. Homeless charity Shelter, however, is bestowing upon this ritual with the holiday spirit of giving—it’s put up a virtual fireplace on YouTube that directly donates all advertising revenue to provide housing for rough sleepers in England.
In the stirring teaser below, viewers are directed to watch the full 10-hour virtual log fire by searching “The Good Fire” on YouTube.
The Good Fire campaign, produced by creative agency Above & Beyond, captures Google AdSense revenue even if you watch as little as one minute of the 10-hour video.
The effort was authorized by Google and is even a joint effort with the YouTube parent, so you can rest assured that the video won’t get banned and that the amount accumulated won’t go to waste.
According to Above & Beyond, in the past year, 401 households were turned homeless per day due to rising living costs.
In addition to dedicating 100% of the video’s advertising revenue to provide housing, Shelter will spend this winter offering professional support and advice to those facing homelessness. The public can also help fund these expert resources by making donations on shelter.org.uk/fire.
