Xiaomi Develops ‘Loop’ Cooling Tech To Do Away With Overheating Smartphones

Xiaomi has just come up with a cooling solution that might herald the beginning of the end for an overheating smartphone after some intense mobile gaming sessions.

The ‘Loop LiquidCool’ Technology, which takes its inspiration from the aerospace industry, is designed to draw liquid cooling agent to the heat source. This will see it vaporize, then disperse the heat toward a cooler area. Then, the liquid condenses again and is captured to be reused.

The process is called a capillary system, and does draw some similarity to the flow of blood in our vessels—except for the fact that, unlike us, it comprises an evaporator, a condenser, a refill chamber, and separate gas and liquid pipes.

Xiaomi claims that the new process has “twice the cooling capabilities and ranks as the most efficient smartphone cooling solution,” in comparison with a conventional vapor chambers (VC) solution.

Although it’s an improvement in leaps and bounds, the two systems actually aren’t radically different. Xiaomi’s Loop system uses the same method as VC liquid cooling, but the difference is that Loop separates the channels for gases and liquids.

When these two states are mixed together, they might obstruct each other, especially when under a high workload. The company has developed somewhat of a ring-shaped pump with its own gas pipe, which “greatly reduces air passage resistance by 30%.” Smoother air flow will, therefore, increase the system’s maximum heat transfer capacity by up to 100%.

Additionally, a one-way circulation system makes sure that liquid will be able to pass through the evaporator, while ensuring that gases don’t move in the wrong direction.

In a demonstration, the team utilized a 30-minute Genshin Impact gameplay session to show how it would work on a Xiaomi MIX 4. On 60fps max video settings, the Loop system managed to keep the device below a maximum temperature of 47.7ºC (118ºF). Plus, the processor was 8.6℃ (47.5ºF) lower than the usual.

The firm writes that the system’s “flexible form factor” enables easy adoption, and it can be stacked in “any type of internal design.” An example of a square-shaped loop is given, and this will allow more space for other components such as the battery or camera module.

Xiaomi aims to bring Loop LiquidCool Technology to its products in 2022.
