Peloton Launches Lawsuit Against Rivals For ‘Copying’ Its Technology

At-home fitness brand Peloton has launched new lawsuits against two of its competitors, Echelon Fitness Multimedia LLC and iFit Inc, allegedly the companies copied its workout technology.
Before this, Peloton had already brought patent disputes against both companies, but has now officially escalated its complaints to lawsuits filed in the Delaware federal court.
The brand, whose core offering is live-streamed and on-demand workouts for its treadmills and bikes, accused Echelon’s bikes, treadmills, and rowing machines of infringing on a patent involving a “control station.” According to Reuters, this was in reference to the live leaderboard Peloton is known for, which allows users to compete against one another during a live class.
As for iFit, Peloton alleged that its bikes, treadmills, and ellipticals infringed on four of its patents, including the “control station,” and three others covering technology such as the program’s algorithm of adjusting workouts based on a user’s output performance.
With how popular at-home workout machines have become since the pandemic, there’ll no doubt be lots more competitors offering similar services in the space. But with Peloton holding on to the approved patent, it won’t be easy for other companies to prove the ingenuity of their offerings.
