Elon Musk Could Bring Starlink’s Internet Service To The Amazon Rainforest

The Brazilian government recently revealed the country’s Communications Minister had met with SpaceX founder, Elon Musk, to discuss plans to bring Starlink’s internet service to the Amazon rainforest.
Based on a translated press release, the government posited that by bringing broadband to remote areas, indigenous communities could tap on the technology to power schools, health centers, and administrative systems.
Additionally, according to Insider, the company could aid governmental organizations in looking out for illegal deforestation in the region. Conversation groups have previously deployed satellites to help track changes to the rainforest’s landscape, such as unlawful logging or forest fires.
This would be an important step in Brazil’s goal of bringing forward its commitment to end illegal deforestation by 2030, with the country announcing at the COP26 climate summit that it was confident it could reach targets by as early as 2028, as per Reuters.
Letting the public have a sneak peek into the talks, Fábio Faria, Brazil’s Communications Minister, tweeted a video of himself and Musk discussing the forthcoming partnership.
“We’re looking forward to providing connectivity to the least-served people of Brazil. With better connectivity, we can help ensure the preservation of the Amazon,” said Musk.
