UN Unveils Plans For First Self-Sufficient, Floating City Immune From Disasters

The UN-Habitat, OCEANIX, and the Busan Metropolitan City in South Korea have teamed up to develop the world’s first self-sufficient, sustainable floating city that could be immune against climate change disasters.
As the global population increases year on year, more people are being moved to coastal cities—such as Busan—though rising sea levels and other climate change disasters, like floods and hurricanes, often threaten the safety of those living near the water.
Therefore, this prototype city hopes to address these issues and develop technologies to help mitigate the risks. These new solutions could then be replicated in other regions worldwide, enabling people to be kept safe from climate change disasters, which at the moment, show no sign of slowing down.

According to Interesting Engineering, the floating city will be made up of a series of hexagonal platforms. It will make use of a buoyant limestone coating, which when exposed to an electric current via underwater minerals, can “repair” itself.
Additionally, the city will be self-sufficient, producing its own food and water, and will be immune to a variety of climate change disasters, including category five hurricanes. If developers are successful in turning this utopian-like city into reality, it could lead the way for safer, more sustainable cities in the future.
“Sustainable floating cities are a part of the arsenal of climate adaptation strategies available to us,” said Executive Director of UN-Habitat, Maimunah Mohd Sharif.
“Instead of fighting with water, let us learn to live in harmony with it. We look forward to developing nature-based solutions through the floating city concept, and Busan is the ideal choice to deploy the prototype.”
