GoDaddy Discovers Huge Data Breach Exposed Over A Million Accounts For Months

Popular web hosting site GoDaddy has announced that it was subject to a security breach that could’ve left up to 1.2 million customers’ information exposed. Most concerning are email addresses, which could be used by hackers to launch nefarious phishing scams or spread computer viruses.
According to USA Today, the company discovered the breach last week, when it noticed an unauthorized actor was accessing its Managed WordPress hosting system.
Following an internal investigation, it contacted law enforcement about the suspicious activity. It was eventually found out that using a compromised password, the actor had been accessing the site’s backend since September 6.
While GoDaddy said it has reset all exposed passwords, important information such as WordPress Admin passwords, database usernames and passwords, and SSL private keys were exposed in the breach, of which long-term consequences are not yet known.
“Our investigation is ongoing and we are contacting all impacted customers directly with specific details,” said Chief Information Security Officer, Demetrius Comes.
“We will learn from this incident and are already taking steps to strengthen our provisioning system with additional layers of protection.”
