TikTok has teamed up with UN Women to launch a new campaign bringing awareness to issues surrounding violence against women, all with an informative in-app hub.
The program’s main aim will be to educate TikTok users on gender-based violence, including topics such as consent, safety, and harmful gender stereotypes. This initiative launched on November 25, which is recognized as the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women.
According to the World Health Organization (via
Mashable), over 730 million women, or nearly one in three, experience physical or sexual violence by an intimate partner, or sexual violence from a non-partner. These startling statistics give reason to why it’s necessary to educate the wider community on such issues.
Using the hashtag #EndViolenceAgainstWomen, experts on TikTok will share information on how to best prevent gender-based violence, or help victims in need. The
official UN Women account has released its very own video, urging that such violence “can and must be prevented.”
Creators on the platform are encouraged to add their own experiences and views to the mix. For example, UK journalist Sophia Smith Galer uploaded
a video on how to better teach consent through improving the current frameworks around sex education.
According to Mashable, users can access the built-in hub via the app’s Discover tab, which will include resources to TikTok’s
Safety Center, and provide pertinent information to victims of sexual assault on how to seek help.
“We know that for our community to thrive and feel free to express their creativity, safety is fundamental. We also believe education is a powerful antidote for hate,” said TikTok’s Head of Product Policy, Julie de Bailliencourt.
