A Collector Spent $650,000 On A Yacht That Only Exists In The Metaverse

It happened—someone spent half a million dollars on a non-fungible token yacht they’ll never be able to set foot on. One can’t help but ask: Why not just splurge for one in real life?
The NFT, titled The Metaflower Super Mega Yacht, was created by developer Republic Realm for The Sandbox platform. It sold for 149 ETH, or approximately US$650,000, making it the most expensive NFT ever sold on the metaverse site.
As Futurism noted, the yacht, which is part of the artist’s The Fantasy Collection, is a “super mega” boat boasting lounge areas, a hot tub, dance floor, DJ booth, and two helipads—though the “helicopters” are sold separately.
If virtual luxury appeals to you, there’s still time to cash in on your very own jet ski, speedboat, or private island. The collection offers all these and more, including marinas and beach clubs for exclusive getaways—though none of these exist in reality, of course.
While it’s unclear who the buyer of the yacht is, or why they bought it in the first place, it’s safe to say the NFT craze doesn’t seem to be going anywhere anytime soon.
