Adidas’ entry into the metaverse has been more of a
follow-along mystery unravel than a singular grand announcement, but it seems that the fog might be clearing up soon.
Latest news of the brand’s digital movements comes in the form of a collaboration with one of the hottest NFT projects around, Bored Ape Yacht Club (BAYC). These stylized ape avatars are currently fetching prices in the
millions on OpenSea, with each token doubling as membership to the club.
Also included in this four-way partnership are NFT comic series
Punks Comic and cryptocurrency investor Gmoney.
This was announced in a teaser post on BAYC’s Instagram page, featuring the silhouette of an iconic ape with logos of all four parties on its tracksuit jacket. Of course, the signature Adidas stripes run along the garment’s sleeves, too.
More details of the collaboration are yet to come, such as a release date, pricing, and what the presumed NFTs will look like. It’s also unclear if this will have anything to do with the cryptic not-quite-yours
NFT that Adidas put out earlier.
However, it’s safe to say that the collaboration will definitely be putting both Adidas and BAYC at a good advantage as the world moves steadily towards a “phygita”l future.
As aptly described by
Input, “securing BAYC as a collaborator is akin in NFTs to Nike having Off-White as a partner.”
