OPPO Teases Durable Phone With Retractable Camera That’s Practically Klutz-Proof

Chinese smartphone brand OPPO might be delivering a nifty retractable smartphone camera to the devices in our back pockets sometime soon.
Teased in a short clip on Twitter, the new camera’s closeups reveal its capability of moving in and out of its housing, providing users with an improved zoom.
According to imaging director Simon Liu, the new module is dubbed the 85-200mm Continuous Optical Zoom, and is suitable for anything from personal portraits to landscapes.
Besides a smooth transition throughout the zoom range, the camera also eradicates some common pain points such as “jumping, white balance inaccuracy, or color bias that conventional multi-camera zoom systems may experience,” Liu explains, speaking at the company’s Future Imaging Technology event earlier this year.
Additionally, a tunnel magnetoresistance (TMR) sensor will allow the module to move precisely, with more stability, so taking videos with it should also be a breeze.

Android Police points out that the camera shown in the Twitter video is sized at 1/1.56” with an aperture of f/2.4. Shots of the teaser show the camera operating in both dry and wet conditions, as well as remaining exposed while being dropped from some height, a nod to its durability and tough make.

Apart from this, OPPO is keeping mum about the invention. It’s assumed that the company will be revealing more about it come December 14, the date of its Inno World event.
OPPO isn’t the only brand vying for an elevated, unique smartphone camera. Apple is reportedly planning something similar in the form of a periscope camera, but not much information has been shared about it.
