Sony Demonstrates Lightweight 8K VR Headset With ‘Overwhelming Sense Of Reality’

During Monday’s Sony Technology Day event , the renowned tech company revealed its plans for its 8K virtual-reality headset, one of eight innovative areas designed under the theme ‘Technology That Inspires Emotion’.
The head-mounted display (HMD) promises “an overwhelming sense of reality” with its OLED microdisplay and high-quality images—4K in one eye, which brings 8K for both.
Yasuko Ishihara and Kei Kimura, Sony engineers, explain how this stunning 8K display will allow for fine details to show up in VR, enhancing the user’s perception of reality. One example is the details that show up in leather used in a luxury car seat.
Its multiple sensors and low latency levels ensure that data can be sent to each display in less than 0.01 seconds, which will also enhance the feeling of reality. After all, real life doesn’t lag, so that smooth sense of movement and action will be very much welcome.
Another plus point is that due to the microdisplay, users will be able to enjoy a lighter headset overall, making it more comfortable to use. This will, of course, be particularly important for periods of extended use.

Currently, this headset is still being demonstrated and tested as a prototype, so there’s no news on when it’ll be more widely available. UploadVR reports that it won’t be anything to do the PlayStation5 PSVR headset, which is expected for a 2022 holiday release.
However, Sony has plans for the headset to be used in both industrial and entertainment contexts, since it’s able to deliver such high-quality imagery based on real-time movement. Ishihara and Kimura have also hinted at potential use in the fields of engineering and medicine.
