Google Debuts ‘Fonts Knowledge’ Platform Teaching A To Z Of Choosing Typography

With over 1,000 free licensed typefaces—plus 2,000 open-source icons—to its name, Google Fonts has been a wonderful resource for designers and brands looking for web-friendly, inclusive fonts.
Now, the library is doing much more. It’s created ‘Fonts Knowledge’, an educational platform consisting of original guides teaching designers of all skill sets to choose the right fonts for specific projects. Because what’s the point of handing someone the keys when they aren’t sure where or how to unlock them?
Typography experts from around the world—including Erik Spiekermann, Jessica Hische, Elliot Jay Stocks, and Gerry Leonidas—personally reviewed and contributed to the content, which covers everything from hierarchy and understanding what makes a typeface legible to pairing typography, the emotional weight of fonts, and even punctuation.

All these topics might seem overwhelming for beginners, but Google Fonts and Fonts Knowledge writer Elliot Jay Stocks have ensured to keep learning enjoyable, injecting some humor in the process. Easy-to-understand visuals make the content a leisurely read for the weekend.

While there are already dozens of articles on the platform, there’s much more waiting in the wings. “This is just the beginning,” says Stocks.
