Last Christmas, Twitter user Danann McAleer (@DanannMcAleer) gave John Lewis a pitch for its next stellar
holiday advertisement, but the very next day, it turned him down.
This year, he’s given it to someone special: Twitter and its entire community.
McAleer had found a short story he’d written as a seven-year-old and saw its potential as a John Lewis commercial. He thus tweeted the handwritten page and tagged the @JohnLewisRetail page, who jokingly responded: “Don’t call us, we’ll call you.”
The social network picked the wrongly-rejected idea up, and teamed up with creative agency
DAVID Madrid as well as animation studio
Passion Pictures Paris to produce what it now proclaims to be “#ThePerfectChristmasAd,” acknowledging its platform as the home to “some of the best stories.”
“While this story did not become a @JohnLewisRetail ad, we enjoyed it so much that we decided to make it our Christmas ad for 2021,” said Twitter. McAleer was, of course, delighted, replying: “I absolutely love it. It’s beautifully done, and I think it should be the start of a franchise! That’s made my day. And made my Christmas too.”
McAleer’s tale features two snowflakes named Jack and James, but it is so short and sweet—with a touch of dark humor—that revealing anything else would ruin the plot for you. Watch the amusing 32-second film below.
