In an attempt to strengthen its employee-retention rate, MGM resorts will now allow job applicants to test-drive roles they’re interviewing for using virtual reality before they join.

Through the VR experience, to-be-employees of the company’s world-famous casinos will be able to better decide if the job is a good fit for them, hopefully reducing the risk of them quitting once they’ve been given the role.

“It can be very difficult just to verbally explain the types of positions or show a video,” Laura Lee, MGM Resorts’ Chief HR Officer, told Insider.

By using VR to see what the role actually entails, applicants will be able to “throw a headset on and really experience the job,” she explained.

As the US faces a nationwide labor shortage, employers are looking to creative ways to reduce employee turnover. Especially in the highly-demanding hospitality industry, which has been hit hard by the pandemic, record numbers of workers have left their jobs, making it even more crucial for firms to ensure newly-hired workers don’t quit too soon.

Lee added that the VR headsets will be available for customer-service jobs at MGM’s employment centers, and could be expanded to career fairs so job seekers can experience the opportunities before applying for them. The experiences will include “difficult guest interactions,” so employees know what they’re really getting into.

This could potentially have “resolved some turnover we experienced when people accepted positions and then realized it wasn’t quite what they thought it would be,” she said.
